Are you struggling to teach your child to read?
Here are 5 basic reading tips for parents:
1. Be patient - don't give up on them. Each child can learn how to read at a different pace. Using your finger to point to each word while they follow along helps them stay focused.
2. Be encouraging - using positive and uplifting words will help your child not get frustrated as easily. Show that you recognize they are trying and applaud them through every step.
3. Find books that interest them - each child is different. Although one of your children may like a certain book, it doesn't mean your others will too. Find books that spark their interest. This helps cement the idea that reading is not a punishment, but a fun activity.
4. Set and maintain a regular time to read - creating a schedule is vital. Choose a time that works for your family that can focus on reading. Make sure it is during a quiet time so your child doesn't get distracted by other things.
5. Make books easily accessible - creating an environment that encourages learning and growth is very important. When my kids were younger, we had low bookshelves filled with different books to allow them to grab them when they wanted to. If they feel like the books aren't accessible, they will be less likely to use them or even remember that they're there.
