How To Parent A Child With OCD

Do you have a child with OCD?

Here are 5 tips on how to parent a child with OCD:

1. Educate yourself - find out all the information you can about your child's OCD. Figure out their rituals, obsessions, or compulsions. Reading books about OCD can also help you better understand what your child is feeling. Make sure to also not accommodate their OCD, otherwise it could get worse. Enabling prevents them from fighting it.

2. Get involved - making sure to acknowledge their triumphs, helps reinforce to your child that you care about them. Adding some incentive or rewards can also help your child want to manage their OCD more.

3. Be clear, set rules - creating structure is very important for children with OCD. However, this does not mean to be harsh. Be firm, yet loving. Communication is key, help remind them and help them not let their OCD control them.

4. Prioritize their sleep - often children with OCD don't get enough sleep from feeling too stressed. Getting the right amount of sleep is important for growth. Physically problems can occur from lack of sleep. One of the rules or routines you can set for your child includes specific times they need to go to bed.

5. Stay calm & move on - remember that they are trying their best. Be patient with them. Getting frustrated or using negative words can really hurt your child's progress. If you believe in them, it will help them be able to believe in themselves.
